Chatham County honored the life of West Chatham Community Activist Anita Boutwell on Saturday, June 6, with a commemoration ceremony for a custom park bench in L. Scott Stell Park.

Boutwell was devoted to the improvement of the West Chatham Community and founded the West Chatham County Community Watch Committee, giving residents a place to voice concerns about their community.

The bench was designed and hand crafted by Anita Boutwell's son, John Boutwell, owner of Roughcut Custom Woodworking. Additionally, a Live Oak Tree has been donated and planted in L. Scott Stell Park by Savannah Tree Foundation.

"We want to be in the business of celebrating those in our community who advocate on behalf of the community, and she advocated for so many people who probably would never know that she was their advocate," Chatham County District 6 Commissioner Aaron "Adot" Whitely said. "I believe it's important for us to honor those folks and to give them their flowers."
