On February 22, 2026, crews from the Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a structure fire on Finn Circle in Savannah. While working to contain the fire and secure the scene, they found more than just a house fire—the residents had made it out, but several dogs on the property needed help, too.
“When we arrived on scene (we were told) there were still six dogs inside the house, so we put our people to work trying to find the dogs,” said Michael Mayers, Battalion Chief, CCFD.
Diamond, Nina, Baby Nina, Mike, Twin, Bear, and Lil’ Bit were all safely removed and brought to Chatham County Animal Services (CCAS), where they’ve been recovering and are now ready for adoption.
One thing they all share? Sleek black coats. Dogs with darker fur often take longer to get adopted—a trend sometimes called Black Dog Syndrome. Whether it’s perception or just being harder to see facial expressions, these pups are often overlooked—but they’ve got just as much personality to offer.
“All of them are very well-behaved dogs and very sweet – a little shy, but they’re overcoming that,” said Rachel Shanley, Volunteer/Social Media Coordinator, CCAS. “They’ve been absolutely great, they’re great with other dogs, they’re friendly, sociable, and love to play.”
Earlier this month, a few of the dogs got to see their firefighter rescuers again. There was a little hesitation at first, but it didn’t take long before tails were wagging.
Now, all seven are still waiting for permanent homes—and a fresh start. You can meet them at CCAS, 7211 Sallie Mood Dr., or check out available pets online. To adopt, just fill out an application in person or online. Adoption fees are currently reduced to $17 through March 31.
After March 31, regular adoption fees are $70 for dogs, plus a $5 tag/license fee for Chatham County residents. All dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption, with surgeries handled by Pet Fix.
Adoptions also include core vaccines (DHPP, Bordetella, and rabies), a heartworm test, deworming, a microchip, and information on free heartworm treatment if needed.
